At Aoba, we implement the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum with an emphasis on developing the characteristics of global leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators in our learners. We focus on building effective communication, problem solving and wise risk-taking skills.

We have chosen the IB because it helps us develop well rounded learners who:

  • respond to challenges with optimism and an open mind;
  • are confident in their own identities;
  • make ethical decisions;
  • join with others in celebrating our common humanity;
  • are prepared to apply what they learn in real world, complex and unpredictable situations (adapted from the IB)

These attributes of internationally minded people represent a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond intellectual development and academic success.

PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME

Lifelong learning begins with a child’s innate curiosity, questioning, and wondering about the world around them. Authentic learning experiences allow children to construct their own learning while feeling secure to take chances and discover.

At Aoba we emphasize on developing the characteristics stated in our Core Values :

  • Global leaders
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Innovators
  • Effective communicators
  • Wise risk-takers

Aoba has adopted the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) as the curriculum framework to target the development of our Core Values.

The PYP caters to learners aged 3 to 12 and is designed to encourage curiosity in an integrative way. A balance is sought between the acquisition of essential knowledge and skills, development of conceptual understandings, demonstration of positive attitudes and taking responsible action.

Learners in the early years learn through play to develop social, thinking, communication, physical and self management skills. Learners explore conceptual understandings through various transdisciplinary themes of global significance. We currently have a year-round approach to our Units of Inquiry to better align with Aoba’s Early Years Philosophy, which focuses on play and the children’s interests as a driver for their inquiries.

Meguro Campus caters for K2 to K5 (1.6 to 6 years old)

Hikarigaoka Campus early years caters from K3 to K5 (3 to 6 years old). The early years programme is structured as a multi-age learning environment.

GRADES 1-6 (K2 to K5)

Learners explore conceptual understandings through the six trans-disciplinary themes of global significance called Units of Inquiry (UOI). This video gives an example of the experience and explains the process students go through during a UOI.

We strive for our UOIs (Unit of Inquiry) to be engaging, challenging, and meaningful.
